On Monday, Kwon Soon-woo lost 3-1 against 28th-seeded Christopher Eubanks and was eliminated from the U.S. Open in the first round.
Since injuring his shoulder in February, Kwon hadn’t played a competitive match until their first-round U.S. Open meeting.
Kwon had a tough time competing with the 27-year-old American, and he ended up dropping both sets 6-3 and 6-4. After falling behind 2-0 in the match, he came back and won the third set 6-0 before losing the decisive fourth set 6-4 and the match.
First-Round Defeat for Kwon Soon-woo
After losing to Eubanks 3-2 in the Australian Open in January, this was Kwon’s second consecutive loss to the latter.
Kwon’s loss on Monday was his third consecutive first-round exit at the U.S. Open. He has never advanced past the second round despite qualifying for the main competition five years in a row. He did so in 2020 and 2022.
According to sports news reports, Kwon’s greatest major tournament performance to date is in the third round of the 2021 French Open.
Following the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon, the U.S. Open is the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. Kwon was injured and unable to compete at the French Open and Wimbledon. After winning the Astana Open in September 2021 and the Adelaide International 2 in January this year, the 25-year-old shot to fame as the first Korean player to win two championships at ATP Tour tournaments.
Despite the setback, Kwon still has the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals to look forward to in Spain from September 12th to 17th.
